175th Catmon Town Fiesta & Jubilee Year Celebration
The 5th Catmon Budbod Kabog Festival
February 10, 2010

FEBRUARY 10, 2010 marked the 175th Catmon Town Fiesta and the commencement of the 175th Jubilee Year celebration of the Municipality of Catmon. One of the highlights was the holding of the 5th Budbod Kabog Festival which had become better and more spectacular since its evolution from the Sadsaran Festival in February 2006 with the purpose of promoting Catmon’s native delicacy – the Budbod Kabog.

The Budbod Kabog Festival contingents this year were composed of students from the five secondary schools and one elementary school in the Municipality of Catmon; namely: Ceferino Sususco Memorial National High School (Brgy. Agsuwao), Catmon National High School (Brgy. Panalipan), Passionist Sisters’ School (Brgy. Flores), Gabriel Jurado Foundation School (Brgy. Flores), Tinabyonan National High School (Brgy. Tinabyonan) and Catmon Central Elementary School (Brgy. San Jose).

At 1 o’clock in the afternoon, the parade participants composed of the Catmon municipal officials and employees, barangy officials and workers, DepEd & private school teachers and staff, and festival contingents braved the scorching heat of the sun for the Sadsaran Street Dancing Parade. The Sadsaran (former name of the festival), coming from the word “sadsad” meaning to dance, has not been completely eradicated. Instead, it has been made a component of the whole Budbod Kabog Festival wherein parade participants walk and festival contingents dance on the poblacion streets.

The Poblacion streets came alive with color and festive music as the parade passed by. The street sides were filled with curious spectators witnessing the lively and well-choreographed street-dancing moves of the artistically-clad contingents.

Before the parade could even finish, the Mayor Pedro J. Monsanto Sports and Cultural Center or the Town Plaza and its vicinity was already filled with people eagerly waiting for the Budbod Kabog Festival Dance Showdown and Search for the Festival Queen 2010 to begin. Governor Gwen Garcia of the Province of Cebu and other honoured guests were there to witness this annual event.

At around three in the afternoon, the search for The Festival Queen 2010 began. The candidates were called one by one and for the first part, the candidates did a production number wherein each individually showed her skills in dancing to the music of the budbod kabog jingle. For the second part, the festival queen candidates with their back-up dancers successively presented and executed their choreographed budbod kabog dance steps. At this point the candidates were judged according to their costumes, gracefulness and interpretation of or their ability to perform the steps of the budbod kabog dance.

After the presentation and judging of the festival queen candidates, the Budbod Kabog Festival Dance Showdown followed. Each group of contingents consisting of fifty or more dancers coming from each of the six participating schools successively presented well-rehearsed and well-choreographed moves and formations with the incorporation of creatively-crafted interpretation of the basic budbod kabog dance steps. The basic nine steps (KABHIG, BUGAW, KAYOG, GIOK, ASOD, ALIG-IG, PASIKO, KILIKITI and PAIBOG) which illustrate the process of the production of budbod kabog should be given emphasis in the choreography.

The two secondary schools (TNHS and CSMNHS) from the mountain barangays proved to be among the top three strong contenders of this year’s festival. The final judging results reveal the following winners:
